Dr. Rai injects the target area with tumescent solution (made up of saline solution, local anesthesia, and adrenaline) prior to liposuction. The solution plumps up and temporarily enlarges the fat deposit prior to liposuction. This solution numbs the area, constricts the blood vessels, and gives Dr. Rai better control over the fat to be removed. Dr. Rai then uses small diameter cannulae (hollow tubes) to gently suction the fat. The tumescent liposuction technique remains the most popular form of liposuction in the United States.
