What is ultrasonic liposuction?
Ultrasonic liposuction (also called ultrasound-assisted liposuction or UAL) is a variation on the liposuction procedure that uses ultrasound to enhance the typical suction action.
How does ultrasonic liposuction work?
Ultrasonic liposuction exploits the weakness of fat cells to more selectively target them. The number and distribution of fat cells in your body is set from puberty. Fat deposits grow and shrink not by adding cells, but because the cells themselves expand. In large fat deposits, the cells are large and their membranes weak. When exposed to ultrasonic energy, they are more likely to burst and can be removed with less trauma to surrounding tissues such as nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels that are more compact and tougher. This can reduce the amount of discomfort and bleeding you experience, and reduce recovery time. It also makes it easier to remove fat from areas where the fat is more fibrous and tougher.
Is ultrasonic liposuction better than traditional liposuction?
No. Ultrasonic liposuction is better in some circumstances and traditional liposuction is better in others. It is important to remember that the liposuction machine is just a tool, and it depends on the hand of the surgeon to operate it, and the mind of the surgeon to pick the right tool for the right job.
What areas can ultrasonic liposuction treat?
Ultrasonic liposuction can be used to treat all the same areas as traditional liposuction. However, it is the preferred liposuction method for areas where the fat is tougher and more fibrous. Areas where Dallas plastic surgeon, Dr. Vasdev Rai typically uses ultrasonic liposuction include:
- Back
- Chest
- Male flanks
However, the composition of fat varies from individual to individual and sometimes ultrasonic liposuction may be recommended based on an evaluation of your area to be treated.
Will ultrasonic liposuction tighten my skin as well as remove fat?
There are a number of anecdotal reports that patients experience skin tightening after ultrasonic liposuction even if their skin condition would not normally predict good tightening. It is generally believed that the heat from the ultrasound can stimulate a healing response in the skin that increases the body’s natural healing process that leads to collagen production and therefore skin tightening.
However, the results are inconsistent and should not be counted on. If you have a significant amount of excess sink in the area to be treated, Dr. Rai will generally recommend a different body contouring procedure, such as a tummy tuck.
